Entropion is a condition most commonly seen in Chinese Shar-Pei and Chinese Shar-Pei mixes and is caused by genetics, not environment or care. In this breed, the condition is directly linked to the overproduction of hyaluronan in the skin.
Chinese Shar-Pei are genetically predisposed to produce excess hyaluronan, which is what creates the loose, wrinkled skin the breed is known for. Unfortunately, that same genetic mechanism can also affect the eyelids. When excess hyaluronan accumulates in the facial tissues, it can cause the eyelids to roll inward rather than resting flat against the eye, resulting in entropion.
Because the gene responsible for hyaluronan production is the same gene that creates wrinkling, entropion cannot simply be bred out without also eliminating the defining characteristics of the breed. For this reason, entropion is considered a breed-related condition rather than the result of poor breeding practices.
When entropion is present, surgical correction is a commonly performed and effective solution. At Mini Hippo Land, we take a proactive approach and offer surgical intervention when appropriate to mitigate the condition and protect long-term eye health.
We believe transparency and education are essential. We work closely with experienced veterinarians and stand behind our puppies with guidance and support so families are informed, prepared, and confident in the care of their dog.
